What is a brazilian wax?

The growth of the beauty and care industry has been responsible for introduction of many trends and techniques of body care. Waxing is one of the most popular trends in this industry, but still, not many people know what is a Brazilian wax. This refers to the epilation of pubic hair in or around the one’s private organs. This procedure was introduced in the United States by the Brazilian-born J sisters in the late eighties. Nevertheless, it gained popularity among American women after being mentioned severally on HBO’s comedy show, Sex and the City.’ Visible pubic hair is disapproved in many societies, hence the need to shave or wax. There are many reasons for removing body hair and they vary from one person to another. Some of the most common include; cultural reasons, personal hygiene, aesthetic, to improve sexual sensitivity and sometimes fashion.

There number of spas, salons and beauty resorts that offer Brazilian waxing services around the country has skyrocketed in the past decade. This means that the services are easily available to prospective clients. Before choosing this procedure, it is important to be armed with information about what to expect. Factors such as hygiene levels, friendliness and customer care are important to keep the clients at ease. The aesthetician must use gloves and sterilized equipment in order to guarantee the safety of the clients.

At the salon, one may be given a small disposable paper thong that is intended to cover the landing strip’. This is basically a small strip of pubic hair that is left after waxing. Some customers however prefer a complete Brazilian waxing which does not leave a landing strip. Clients lie on a padded table, much like a visit to the gynecologist, and the procedure begins.

The procedure is easy and takes approximately fifteen minutes. The spa attendant applies a light powder over the pubic area then follows with pre-heated waxing cream. A strip of cloth is then used to cover the wax and ripped off immediately, removing the hairs right from the follicle. In cases where the hair is really long, the attendant may choose to trim it before the procedure. For first timers, the procedure is relatively painful, since the hairs are pulled off from deep beneath the subcutaneous surface. However, over subsequent visits, the procedure becomes less painful as the skin gets used to waxing.

There are several benefits of undergoing the Brazilian waxing procedure. Unlike shaving, waxing does not leave any bumps on the skin. This reduces the chances of having ingrown hairs under the skin and undergoing the uncomfortable itching experience associated with shaving. Waxing significantly reduces the hair growth cycle.

On the flip side, there are some disadvantages associated with this procedure. First of all, many clients are not comfortable with the idea of being naked and exposing their genitalia to a stranger. Even though the procedure is likened to a visit to the gynecologist, some clients still feel embarrassed. The use of hot wax and the pain experienced the first few times is also a deterrent to many potential clients. Aestheticians recommend the use of numbing creams and anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce the irritability and pain.
